Important Changes: Updates to Our Nonprofit Status

We are thrilled to announce that the Kathryn Leigh Thurgaland Foundation has been officially recognized as a Public Charity by the IRS under Internal Revenue Code Section 501(c)(3).

This designation highlights the incredible work and dedication of our team, with a special acknowledgment of Jodell Thurgaland, who has recently been appointed as Executive Director in recognition of her exceptional contributions and under the unanimous support of our board.

It's a relief to report that the IRS agent assigned to us was incredibly helpful in the process and let us know that based on our business documents and financials, the foundation is being run like a Pubic Charity and so we should be recognized as one too. We have finally received the determination letter and are excited to share that:

  • The Kathryn Leigh Thurgaland Foundation is a Public Charity and this will be updated on the IRS website by May 13th.

  • The IRS has backdated our recognition to the start of our foundation, and ANY donations made to the KLT Foundation from July 13th, 2021, are tax-deductible as a Public Charity (rather than our previous Private Foundation status)

  • All Donors can deduct contributions they make under IRC Section 170. We recommend that you speak to your tax professional for advice and to learn how this directly effects your income tax return.

From the beginning, our mission has been to honor Kathryn's memory by spreading love, joy, and positivity in the world. Now, with our Public Charity status we can continue to do just that, reaching even more people and making an even greater difference.

We want to express our deepest gratitude to all of you who have supported us along this journey, whether through donations, volunteering, or simply spreading the word about our causes. Your support has been invaluable, and we couldn't have achieved this milestone without you.

As we look to the future, we are filled with excitement about the opportunities that lie ahead and the impact we can continue to make together. We're especially looking forward to seeing everyone in just a couple of weeks at the Love of Life Festival on Saturday, May 11th, 2024 where we'll celebrate life, music, and art in honor of Kathryn and all those who have moved on from this life.

Thank you for being a part of the Kathryn Leigh Thurgaland Foundation, Public Charity, and here's to spreading love and positivity for many magical moments ahead.
